This is an estimate of the melt value of the silver only, not an offer. Buyers pay less than melt value. Silver-plated items have almost no melt value.

Silver stamps

  • 925 / Sterling: 92.5% silver. Under US rules, “sterling” must be at least 925/1000 pure silver (16 CFR 23.5).
  • 900 / Coin: 90% silver. “Coin silver” must be at least 900/1000 (16 CFR 23.5).
  • 830 and 800: 83% and 80% silver, found on older European silver.
  • 999: fine silver, mostly bullion bars and coins.

Plated silver is not solid silver

Marks like EPNS (electroplated nickel silver), “silver plate” or “nickel silver” mean the item is base metal with at most a thin silver layer. Its melt value is close to nothing.

Weighing silver items

Candlesticks and some cutlery handles can be “weighted”: filled with resin or other material. The weight on the scale is then much more than the silver. Knives often have steel blades. Weigh only the silver part where you can.

Buyers pay less than melt value for silver too. As one published example, Northern Refineries lists 90% of the fine silver for 20 pounds or more of sterling and 80% for less (settlement terms, checked October 19, 2026).
