What 22K gold means
22 karat gold is 22 parts gold out of 24, about 91.7%. It is usually stamped 916 (91.6%), which is the figure used here. It has a deep yellow color and is much softer than 14K or 18K.
22K is widely used for traditional jewelry in South Asia and the Middle East. Several well-known bullion coins are also made from 22K gold, so if you have a gold coin, check its official specification as well as its weight.
How to recognize 22K gold
Look for 22K, 22KT, 916 or 917. Jewelry sold in India may carry a BIS hallmark with the number 22K916. Because 22K is soft, worn pieces may have lost some weight over years of use, so always weigh the item rather than relying on a receipt.
Selling 22K gold
22K is close to pure gold, so the melt value per gram is high, and a small difference in the buyer’s percentage makes a large difference in money. Ask for a written price per gram for 22K specifically.
What buyers pay for 22K
One refinery that publishes its terms, Northern Refineries in the US, says it pays 96% of the fine gold it recovers from karat gold for lots of 3 troy ounces or more, and 94% for smaller lots, based on the market price on the day the order is completed (Northern Refineries settlement terms, checked October 19, 2026). That is a refinery price for people who ship scrap to them. Jewelry stores, pawnshops, cash-for-gold shops and mail-in buyers set their own prices, which are not published in the same way, and they can be much lower. The only way to know is to ask several buyers for a written price per gram for your karat.
