What 24K gold means
24 karat gold is pure gold. In practice it is sold as 999 (99.9%) or 9999 (99.99%) fine, because no refinery can make metal that is 100.000% gold. This page uses 999 for its numbers. Pure gold is very soft, so it is used mostly for bullion bars and coins, and less often for jewelry.
How to recognize 24K gold
Look for 24K, 999, 999.9 or 9999, often with the refiner’s name and a serial number on bars. Fake bars exist; buy and sell bullion through reputable dealers.
Selling 24K gold
Bullion bars and coins are usually bought and sold with a small spread around the spot price, and the price often depends on the brand and the size of the bar. Jewelry is different: buyers usually treat 24K jewelry as scrap and pay a percentage of the melt value. Always compare the offer with the melt value shown here.
The calculator also offers “24K (24/24, 100%)” for comparison with theoretical pure gold, but for real items 999 is the more accurate choice.
What buyers pay for 24K
One refinery that publishes its terms, Northern Refineries in the US, says it pays 96% of the fine gold it recovers from karat gold for lots of 3 troy ounces or more, and 94% for smaller lots, based on the market price on the day the order is completed (Northern Refineries settlement terms, checked October 19, 2026). That is a refinery price for people who ship scrap to them. Jewelry stores, pawnshops, cash-for-gold shops and mail-in buyers set their own prices, which are not published in the same way, and they can be much lower. The only way to know is to ask several buyers for a written price per gram for your karat.
